The Ligurian coastline between Portofino and Cinque Terre remains one of Europe's few stretches where villages cling to cliffs without direct road access between them. Afternoon departures align with the aperitivo tradition — Ligurian focaccia, local white wine, and anchovies served on deck as the sun drops behind the Maritime Alps. Monterosso, the westernmost village, marks the turnaround point for tours originating in La Spezia, while Portofino-based routes often extend to Portovenere, where Byron and Shelley summered in the 1820s.
The coastline's protected status means no new construction permits have been issued since 1997. Population in the five villages peaked at 7,200 in 1950 and now sits below 4,000 year-round. That demographic contraction preserved the terraced vineyards producing Sciacchetrà, the amber dessert wine fermented in stone cellars. Every boat tour from Portofino to Cinque Terre passes beneath those ancient terraces, maintained by cables and winches installed in the 1960s when mule transport became economically unviable.
